I had one of those days today. The I’m-frustrated-so-I’m-crying-at-my-desk kind of day. Mostly frustrated with my work load and my ability to handle it. And probably that pairs with PMS. But oh well, that’s what alcohol is for.
I stopped on the way home to pick up Bell’s Hopslam at our favorite crazy-awesome alcohol super-store, Kahn’s Fine Wines. (Website is currently under construction. They’re just up the street from us and have everything, and know everything.) I hadn’t tried Hopslam before but I hear it is very limited, and Kahn’s tweeted that they got it in today and that it probably wouldn’t even last until tomorrow. Literally they sell it for like $18 a 6-pack and Kahn’s had a one-case limit! I promised B that I’d pick some up. I also got myself a bottle of wine (it was necessary.)
I had the best check-out experience ever. As I walked by the line to find my wine, this girl’s eyes went HUGE and she said quietly “I didn’t see that!” I went back and told her that if she was talking about the Hopslam, she’d have to ask for it special and they’d get it from the back. She told me that her and her husband had toasted with it at their wedding and excitedly went off to get some. Then the checkout lady and I got to talking about pugs (she has one) which was really the icing on the cake. Perfect ending to a previously shitty day.
The wine ended up being a disappointment, but not for the wine’s sake. I was really excited to get a Vertical Houdini wine opener last month for us for Christmas. B’s moms have the Rabbit Houdini one and we’ve LOVED using it every time we’re over. I thought the vertical one would be an improvement. It ended up being jerky, awkward, the opposite of smooth, and less effective. It was just bothersome before but today it did this:
I drink Oliver wine probably more than any other type of wine. And have never had a cork go IN instead of OUT before. Not sure what to do about this. I definitely don’t have the receipt anymore. Wah.
After some wine with dinner I watched trashy wedding shows and then decided to try a Hopslam!
The aromas were awesome!!! There was a hint of grapefruit which I adore on top of the intense hop flavor. It was totally drinkable and refreshing without being light or boring. It’s an awesomely intense beer. You all know I love my IPAs!
I also love the (dare I say cute?) hop-slamming graphic too!
Now I’m trying not to fall asleep until B gets home after work. In the meantime, I urge you all to attempt to locate some Bell’s Hopslam near you!

Sorry your Houdini wasn’t a winner. It seems I can’t open any bottle of wine without my wine key. Those “easy openers” aren’t easy for me!!!
I friggin love our Oster electronic wine opener. Its like $20 and has lasted over two years now without a single problem. We’ve also given it as gifts and noticed that everyone we gave it to uses and loves it!
I’ll check out the Hopslam for Pete. He loves IPAs, I don’t. Glad your night got a bit better babe :)
I couldn’t help but giggle at the cork=fail.
Have a GREAT weekend and kiss da puggies for me!!!!
I’ve never heard of Bell’s Hopslam but I’m so intrigued!! I think my FI would just love it. I wonder if they have it in DC?
And I’ve never tried the vertical wine opener, but we have the rabbit one from Bed Bath & Beyond, which I absolutely LOVE. I must admit that I do sometimes like to open it the old fashioned way, though.. with a waiter’s corkscrew!
Oh no! I’ve had that happen before with a cork…makes me crazy. I have the regular Houdini that looks like the Rabbit opener, and I’ve never had a problem so far! So far…
On a side note: I am particularly fond of wine bottle with screw tops. I’m so lazy
Ugh, that sucks. It’s happened to me before, which is why I am lazy and make the Mr. open almost all of our wine. :)
Ugh I hate when that happens with a cork… happens to me once in a while which then forces me to just drink the whole bottle in one setting. :)
Oh I’ve totally pushed the cork in on numerous occasions and, like Laura, I just choose to drink the entire thing in one sitting. This post literally made me drool because I’m so alcohol deprived. Tear.
Girl, I know the whole “having the worst day ever now I need a bottle of liquor” days all too well. Shoot, I had one yesterday! Life is too damn difficult and sometimes the only cure is a shot of sweet poison :) And yes, that bottle is FREAKING cute!!
I love that we blog about similar things – pugs and Hopslam!! :) I also really love their logo, it’s adorable. Hope you had a nice weekend!
